Court Services Update

The San Diego Superior Court is modernizing the case management system for all Civil cases and the transition is planned to take place over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Civil case files will move to the same system that currently holds Family, Juvenile Adoptions, Probate, Small Claims, and Traffic cases. Accordingly, those case types will also be affected during the transition time, and certain online systems will be unavailable beginning after the close of business on Wednesday, July 3, through Monday, July 8, 2024, to allow for Civil cases to be converted to the Odyssey case management system.

“This new case management system is an important and necessary change that will offer several new benefits to the public.  We know that there will be a few growing pains as we make the change. We have selected the holiday weekend to implement the new system to lessen the impact on the public as much as possible,” said Michael Roddy, San Diego Superior Court Executive Officer. “Court employees will be working through the holiday weekend to launch the new Civil case management system and minimize downtime for the other case types.”

Although all court locations will be open for business on Friday, July 5, the case management system switch will limit some online and in-person services that are normally available. Attorneys and the public are encouraged to avoid visiting the business offices on Friday, July 5, unless necessary, as delays should be expected. Most of the business offices will require filings to be dropped off rather than processed at the counter.

Across all affected case types, the Online Case Search (Court Index), online Registers of Actions, and online Court Calendar will not reflect updates made after the close of business on July 3 until July 8, 2024.

Between close of business on July 3 through July 8, parties may submit Civil, Family, and Probate filings through one of the court’s approved e-Filing service providers, but e-Filed documents will not be reflected on the Online Register of Actions until on or after July 8, 2024. The use of e-Filing during the affected time is recommended only for those who have filings with statutory deadlines; all others are encouraged to e-File documents before the close of business on July 3, or wait until July 8. Documents that are e-Filed during this timeframe will be processed in the order received, except for time-sensitive documents, such as restraining orders, which will be processed on an expedited basis.

Additional impacts vary by case type:

Civil
The Reserve a Civil Date (RACD) application will be disabled after the close of business on July 3, 2024, and will be re-established as a new application, Motion and Reservation System (MARS), on July 8, 2024. The Tentative Rulings system and the Unlawful Detainer Exhibit Upload Application will not be impacted and will remain available.

Small Claims
All small claims filings will need to be placed in the drop box as hearing dates and notice generation will be unavailable. The Small Claims Exhibit Upload Application will not be impacted and will remain available.

Probate
The Odyssey system will not reflect updates made after the close of business on July 3, 2024, until July 8, 2024. Filings will not be processed until on or after July 8, 2024.

Family
Online copy requests will be unavailable after the close of business on July 3, 2024, until July 8, 2024.

Traffic
The following systems will be unavailable after the close of business on July 3, 2024, and will be re-established on July 8, 2024:

  • ePortal (Make Payments)
  • MyCitations: Ability to Pay (ATP)
  • Traffic Court Appointment Scheduler

Juvenile Adoptions
The Odyssey system will not reflect updates made after the close of business on July 3, 2024, until July 8, 2024. Filings will be accepted on Friday, July 5, 2024, but will not be processed until on or after July 8, 2024.

The new case management system brings increased standardization of records across case types within the San Diego Superior Court.
